A Brief Primer on Film Programming, Pt. 1

For several years I’ve been involved in film programming, mostly of the independent and grassroots variety, and I thought I’d hit some of the highlights here.

For my KHLOARIS project, I put together this screening of KHLOARIS-produced work, as well as work by some of our friends, and like-minded international artists I’ve communicated with online. The NYC premieres of the KHLOARIS films “Holy Wound” and “The Bathtub” were at this event, as well content by Justice, Travis Wood, Royal Trux, Brain Drain Industries, Mike Diana, TFG, Dwayne Mendez, Zoe Alice Camina, Léna Piani, and Mark Reynolds.

Poster layout and direction by Kenneth Filmer and Hazel Lee Santino. Original Art by Hazel Lee Santino.

It was a free event in the rooftop area of the wonderful Our Wicked Lady in Bushwick, Brooklyn, and we had a packed house. “Holy Wound” director Josafat Concepcion orchestrated an occult-themed burlesque dance number to open the festivities.

I put together this very socially-distanced screening at the historic, and enormous Temple Theater in downtown Meridian, Mississippi so the cinema-starved (including ourselves!) in town could enjoy a Halloween double feature.

A great old image of the Temple Theatre. It’s an amazing place, and perfect for a Halloween screening.

“Gross and In Love” is a program I put together for my KHLOARIS project for a special Valentine’s Day screening at the Valentine’s Day art opening at Superchief’s NYC’s “Pretty Gross” group art show. We were something of a late addition to the program, so we used some of our greatest hits, but we had some great international filmmakers and artists we hadn’t worked with before in the program as well. This program was a rousing success. Superchief is a well known international “new art” enterprise, and we’ve always had fun screening with them.

This program screened, in its entirety, again online with our friends at the Sick ‘N’ Wrong Film Festival (since rechristened as the BizarroLand Film Festival), along with a late night Q&A with a lot of our collaborators.

PSAs for the State of New Jersey

I operated camera (and learned and operated a new teleprompter app on the fly!) to help out some very old friends at Riot Productions and Soul Rebel productions with these PSAs, paid for by the State of New Jersey. They included Dr. Shereef Elnahal, from Biden’s transition team, Dr. Charles Farmer and Maritza Beniquez, RN.

Reel from 2021

My reel, with some work from 2020 and 2021, and some much older stuff. Focused on director, producer and/or writer credits. Probably needs an update!

New York Animated Promo

I wrote, co-directed, co-produced and even did the music for this spec New York promo. It was done remotely with my animating partner for my KHLOARIS project.

Brooklyn Fire Proof Classroom: The Project, and the Documentary Film

A couple of years ago, I put together a really rewarding project where I brought in the storied Millennium Film Workshop and the wonderful Job Path to do cell phone experimental filmmaking program. I directed and produced a documentary for the screening event we held at the end of the program, which can be viewed below. The original press release we created for the event, along with some stills and ephemera can be viewed here.
